Fantasy Premier League Cheaper Alternatives- Midfielders

The midfield is one area where all FPL gaffers try to have at least 4 midfielders, if not 5, who could score plenty of points and help FPL bosses mount a serious challenge in the game. Having looked at goalkeepers and defenders in the first and second installment of this series, we turn our attention to midfielders for this particular installment. For the midfielders, our main focus would be on players who could be your 4th or 5th choice midfielders and the maximum price limit for them is £6.0m.

1. Matt Phillips (West Brom)

Price: £6.0m

First five fixtures: Bournemouth (H), Burnley (A), Stoke (H), Brighton (A), West Ham (H)

Matt Phillips scored the 4th most points in the game for players priced at £6.0m or below. Phillips bagged 4 goals and 8 assists in 27 appearances for The Baggies last season and could have had more if he wasn’t injured during the fag end of last season. With West Brom having a favorable run early on and Phillips back to full fitness, he could once again be amongst the points and could prove to be a bargain at £6.0m.

2. Anthony Knockaert (Brighton)

Price: £6.0m

First five fixtures: Man City (H), Leicester (A), Watford (A), West Brom (H), Bournemouth (A)

The second player on our shortlist is Brighton’s right-winger and Championship Player of the Year for 2016/17, Anthony Knockaert. Formerly of Leicester, Knockaert found the net 15 times and set up another 5 goals in the Championship last season. Even though he may not be able to replicate his Championship form, but having a modest price of £6.0m he could be a gamble worth taking for the first few fixtures.

3. Tom Ince (Huddersfield)

Price: £6.0m

First five fixtures: Crystal Palace (A), Newcastle (H), Southampton (H), West Ham (A), Leicester (H)

It looks like this could finally be the year when Tom Ince performs at the highest level of English football. After 2 unsuccessful seasons in the Premier League with a scanty return of just 1 goal and 1 assist over the 2 seasons, Ince has had 2 solid seasons in the second division of English football with a total of 25 goals for Derby. This season, he does return to the top-flight, but with Huddersfield and not with Derby, and only time will tell whether he makes it big in the Premier League or not. Huddersfield have a good first few games and Ince could really stamp his authority early on in the season.

4. Marc Albrighton (Leicester)

Price: £5.5m

First five fixtures: Arsenal (A), Brighton (H), Man United (A), Chelsea (H), Huddersfield (A)

Since Craig Shakespeare’s taken over the reigns at Leicester, it has become evident that Albrighton is his first choice left-winger with Albrighton starting the majority of the games under Shakespeare. Marc got 2 goals and 6 assists for Leicester last season and with not many wingers available at such a low price, the 27 year old could be a good 4th or 5th choice midfielder in your FPL side. With Leicester facing Arsenal, United and champions Chelsea in the first few weeks, he isn’t really an immediate option, but could be considered from gameweek 7 when Leicester play Bournemouth, West Ham and Swansea in quick succession.

5. Aaron Mooy (Huddersfield)

Price: £5.5m

First five fixtures: Crystal Palace (A), Newcastle (H), Southampton (H), West Ham (A), Leicester (H)

Our next player is someone who is nicknamed the Aussie Iniesta, not for being similar in appearance to the World Cup winning legend, but for having a similar playing style. Mooy, who spent the last season on loan at Huddersfield Town from Manchester City recently completed a permanent switch to Huddersfield Town. Mooy played a crucial role in Huddersfield’s bid for promotion and created a staggering 98 chances in the Championship last season. He also chipped in with 4 goals and 7 assists and with favorable few fixtures first-up for Huddersfield in their first season in the top flight, Mooy could be an option given his price of £5.5m.

6. Chris Brunt (West Brom)

Price: £5.5m

First five fixtures: Bournemouth (H), Burnley (A), Stoke (H), Brighton (A), West Ham (H)

Chris Brunt is one of those players whose position has been changed in the game. Brunt, who was a defender for the past few seasons, is now classified as a midfielder in the game. This could impact the clean sheet points he got, but with West Brom boasting of players with exceptional heading abilities like McAuley and  Rondón, and with Brunt on set-piece duty, he could still be getting those assists and occasional goals too.

In the fourth and final installment of this series, we’ll be looking at a few cheap forwards who you could have in your side.

  1. I love this list man. Concise, backed with evidence and well written. I’d totally overlooked Mooy myself though I’d even kept tabs on him last season (support City).

Closer to the season maybe add me to your league?
